The FOnline Engine is an MMORPG engine, developed by Russian Fallout fans. The game is in no way connected to Interplay's Project V13 (Fallout Online), the official Fallout MMO. The FOnline Engine was created from scratch and supports original Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: Tactics and Arcanum graphic and sound assets and other game files.

The development of FOnline (Engine) started already in early 2004.

Since later updates in 2010 and 2011, the engine also supports Fallout: Tactics and Arcanum graphic files.

SDK Release

On the 1. september 2010, the FOnline SDK was released. It is now possible to create your own server and games based on the FOnline Engine. The general developer chat can be found at #fodev on irc.forestnet.org.

Combat

Fights are either in real-time (like FT) and turn-based (like F1/F2), and the choice of which combat style to play is left to you, so depending on your preferances you can either take part in tactical, action-management battles or a series of frantic react-or-die brawls.

If a player dies, he will respawn in special locations, called "Replication Station", with all memories up to the moment of death. Money (in the form of bottle caps) is taken from the player for the cloning process. The player will spawn with the default blue overalls and the pip-boy, at which point they will wish you 'Good day'. All items, implants and money will remain on the corpse, which can be looted. Dead players' corpses persist in the game world for a few minutes, then they, and all equipment on the corpse, will dissapear.

Quests

All quests will be divided into groups: Cycle-based (Clean up a shelter, clear a area of wreckage, repair the generator), Disposable (Become a paladin of Brotherhood of Steel or become a citizen of Vault-City) and Unique (Save the world). While cycle-based quests will be available to players from time to time, Disposable quests will be available to one-time only to a limited number of players. Unique quests may be completed only once per game session. Considering the variety of the Fallout world, we hope that they will keep everyone entertained.

Open Test

The third open beta test started on the 15. august 2009 and will hold until the official release of the engine. Also notable is, that on the 15. august 2009 the first open test of FOnline: 2238 started. A game based on the FOnline engine which started out as simple modification, called "Faction Mod" and turned into it's own game after the game became much more than just a "Faction mod".

Games based on the FOnline Engine

FOnline: The Life After

The first game based on the FOnline engine was FOnline: The Life After. It was only developed in russian and english. The game is set in the year 2246 on the Fallout 2 worldmap.

FOnline: 2238

FOnline: 2238 is a Fallout game based on the FOnline engine. It has developed in english language only, and there are no current plans to translate it into any other languages. The game is set in the year 2238, 3 years before Fallout 2 starts and uses the Fallout 1 and 2 worldmap combined into one, allowing players to explore and adventure through the entire 'classic' Fallout world. It also includes an expansive system of professions and crafting items to promote a Player-based economy. The main feature of this game is the ability to enlist with existing canon organisations (such as the mighty Brotherhood of Steel, the up-and-coming NCR or the sinister Enclave), join a player-created faction or even form your own wasteland gang.

Other

It is possible to build new games with the FOnline engine, which are 100% independent from all Fallout content. Thanks to this, it is also possible to use the engine for commercial projects.
